Making a WorkCover Claim in Queensland, Step by Step
Knowing what happens next takes a lot of the worry out of a work injury. Here is how a Queensland workers compensation claim usually runs.
01. Tell your employer straight away
Report the injury to your supervisor or employer as soon as you can, even if it seems minor at the time. Your employer then has to notify their insurer. Reporting early protects you if the injury turns out to be worse than you first thought.
02. See a doctor and get your Work Capacity Certificate
In Queensland you get to choose your own treating doctor, so you are welcome to come to us. We will assess your injury and complete your Work Capacity Certificate, which is the document your claim is built on.
03. Lodge your claim
You or your employer lodges the claim with WorkCover Queensland, or with your employer’s self-insurer if they are self-insured. You will need your Work Capacity Certificate. Time limits apply, generally six months from when a doctor assesses your injury, so it is best not to sit on it. You can check the current limits with WorkCover Queensland.
04. Your claim is assessed
The insurer reviews your claim and lets you know their decision, generally within 20 business days of receiving your application. Your certificate and medical notes support that decision.
05. Reviews, then back to work
You will come back for review appointments so we can monitor your recovery and update your certificate. When you are ready, we work with you and your employer on suitable duties or a graduated return to work, so you go back at a pace your body can handle.

Your First WorkCover Visit: What to Bring
To get the most out of your first visit, please bring these along if you have them:
o Your Medicare card and photo ID
o Your WorkCover claim number, if a claim has already been lodged
o Details of how, when and where the injury happened
o Your employer’s name and contact details, and the name of your supervisor
o A description of your normal duties, including any lifting, driving or standing
o Any X-rays, scans, hospital paperwork or letters from your insurer
o A list of your current medicines
Do not worry if you do not have a claim number yet. We can still see you, assess the injury and help you get the process started.

WorkCover Questions We Get Asked Most
Who completes my work capacity certificate, and what goes in it?
Your treating doctor completes it. It sets out your injury, your capacity for work, any restrictions such as no heavy lifting, and your treatment plan. Your employer and WorkCover Queensland both need it, and it is updated at each review appointment.
Does my employer get to pick the doctor I see?
No. In Queensland you have the right to choose your own treating doctor. You do not have to see a doctor nominated by your employer or their insurer, and you are welcome to come to us.
Can I be seen before my claim has been lodged?
Yes. If you already have a claim number, bring it with you. If not, come in anyway and we will assess your injury and complete the certificate you need to lodge your claim.
How much time should I allow for the first visit?
Please allow a longer appointment for your first visit so there is time to examine the injury, talk through treatment and complete the paperwork without rushing. Let our reception team know it is a work injury when you book so we can allow enough time.
How many follow up visits will I need?
That depends on your injury and how your recovery is tracking. Work capacity certificates only cover a short period, so regular reviews keep your certificate current and your claim on track. Your doctor will let you know when to come back in.
Who pays for my WorkCover consultations?
Once your claim is accepted, WorkCover related consultations and treatment are generally billed to the insurer rather than to you. Before a claim is accepted, or if it is declined, normal practice fees may apply. If you are unsure, call and speak to one of our friendly staff on (07) 3184 5900 before your appointment.
Can a work injury be handled over telehealth?
A work injury usually needs to be examined in person, especially at the first visit, so the assessment and your certificate are accurate. Give us a call on (07) 3184 5900 and our staff will let you know what suits your situation.
Which work injuries and illnesses can be claimed in Queensland?
Workers compensation generally covers injuries and illnesses that arise out of your employment. That includes sudden injuries like fractures and sprains, injuries that build up over time such as repetitive strain, aggravation of an existing condition, and psychological injuries. If you are not sure whether your situation qualifies, come in and we will talk it through.
WorkCover has rejected my claim, what now?
You have the right to have the decision reviewed. Clear medical documentation matters a great deal here, and our doctors can provide the reports needed to support a review of your claim.
